As a big supporter and fan of Triplag, and as a female...
i must say i was surprised to see Triplag refer to the female DJs on today's broadcast as "DJane's"....

Why differentiate genders with this tag? Artists are artists - and tagging females with this title seems to demote them to "girls' instead of allowing them to compete as equals on the artistic playing field.

Surely a female as powerful as Savina doesn't need a "JANE" in front of her name to make sure we know what anatomical parts she possesses...!!! She's a killer producer and DJ - no need to identify her by her body parts.... or Veda or anyone else for that matter....

I'm not speaking on Savi's behalf or anyone else's - and I haven't consulted them about this..... And since i no longer DJ myself, perhaps I don't have the right to tell women how to promote themselves ... but i would love to hear from the women especially why they are promoting themselves this way - if indeed they are......

On the other hand, if it's the boys who have decided to bring this silly commercial house music term into our world, then i speak up as an ancient female who has seen quite a few sound boards in my time and I say : please reconsider before shoving us women into the "Jane" pot again.....

I think that ought to be fair enough, wouldn't it?

Let us try to get rid of the present misogyny in psychedelic trance culture [and society, of course] - and first stop, in my humble opinion, would be to cease the use of epithets which, despite if they could be identified as a product of misogyny or misandry, could be of any harm in terms of how the artist's work/performance actually is approached by the listener/dancer.

Some time ago few female "tracks mixing specialists" asked me to identified them as DJane on a flyers, website etc... They were proud to show a difference.

Rachel i changed post into poll, since that what you are asking.... Hope this is ok with you.

I also have few complaints from male "tracks mixing specialists" that they do not want to be marked as DJ ..... some tendency here eh? ....... but to date this is the only way to identify a person playing someone esle's tracks from the person who plays his own.

I didn't actually knew that "DJane" was/is used to identify a female DJ. I personally think it's wrong. A DJ is a DJ, the same as a doctor is a doctor! No need to divide.

Well, first than all thanks for ur words Rachel....if i be sincere here in Venezuela i never have been into the "jane"....i saw this word maybe one year ago in a flyer from a party in europe ....and my first reaction was.... "Djane"?...is like the women of Tarzan!

I know what Rachel means, coz sometimes ppl want to promote body parts, faces and not good music that its the most important here!

I think that here we don´t have "djanes" promoting herself....and for sure Triplag is not promoting our bodys...just maybe is normal at this moment to put Djanes for females...but yes... for me...we are Djs i think!

I would have to agree that using the term 'Djane' does sound a little derogatory, as if it makes a difference whether the dj is male or female which obviously it doesn't. I would not agree with using a term that is intended to make a division between the sexes of artists. As has been said before,an artist is an artist whatever their sex.
However, maybe because I'm male or maybe because I have not seen or heard of so many female darkpsy djs on the scene, when I see a dj name I (rightly or wrongly) assume they are male as it is much more common. For that reason alone I quite like having an indicator (not necessarily the 'Djane' tag but something) which lets myself and others know that there are also more females than people might think whipping up frenzies on dancefloors around the world.

I think DJ is a title that is good enough. I don't need to know if there's a joystick in the booth for the DJ to gain my respect. Proper mixing skills and the ability to stomp a hole in the floor should be all the credentials a DJ needs.

Actually I remember when this was really big back in the NYC house and acid days of the early 90's. As a promoter from past events, I always cringed when the female mixers would insist on the DJane thing on flyers and stuff. Funny, but I used to promote a crew called the No-Balz Mafia, all hard house and jungle DJs, who insisted they be called DJ or just Spinfreaks, no shit, Spinfreaks, to break the exclusionary and nasty DJ gender bias.

I think we should be a world apart from that, because the more mainstream dance genres are completely male dominated. I see it a lot in psy as well, but now we are really getting a great and talented bunch of women who aren't afraid to speak out and push us to really be aware of our nature.

I mean, for me anyway, an excuse to be exclusionary or biased comes from my very primal male nature, and someone has to remind me to think with my big brain, not the tiny stupid one.

DJ is as DJ does, mwahahahahah!

BTW- I actually seek out female DJs in the psy world, as it is a rare and special thing that some of them bring to the music experience. A woman's touch can really add gentleness and compassion to the music and shamanism, in my experience, as the mothering or female nurturing nature comes through with the vibes.

EDIT-oops, forgot to say that some of the most insane and demented DJs I've ever seen were women. Used to have some massive mid 90's squat parties run by a female squatter collective of artists. Mixing death metal, grindcore, punk, horrorcore goth, heavy brutal stuff you would never have heard in dance music circles back then.

I don't know man, I've seen some vicious set's played by female DJ's at the MetaForce gatherings in New York. They stomp hard. Just feed 'em cd's and they shit evil. it's awesome.

Yeah, I've had many nights of absolute horror trips while my friends Kristen and Hellen spin the ultra evil stuff that scares even me.

I still love to see a woman quietly step up at DJ sausage fest and blow all our sets away, after we did the whole macho shit talking and all the male chest beating and cock smacking bullshit.

A Sister by the name of Hellerion, aka HELLenEvil is about to lay down some tracks and sets for me to put up on Triplag.

She freaking scares me sometimes, she's so damn aggressive and far out evil. She's working on her first Black Magik DJ sets and solo tracks, so stay tuned for that insanity.
